The Dogpatch Hub: Get to know Your Community Center
The front entrance of The Dogpatch Hub on Minnesota Street near 24th Street.
In this blog, we highlight local organizations working to improve our neighborhood and support the businesses, makers and people of Dogpatch and Potrero Hill.
So far we have highlighted the work of the Dogpatch Art & Business Association (DABA), the Dogpatch Neighborhood Association (DNA) and the Green Benefit District (GBD).
This month we turn the spotlight on the first dedicated, publicly accessible community center located in Dogpatch — The Dogpatch Hub. The Hub operates as a non-profit and is located at 1278 Minnesota Street, across from the Minnesota Street Project and located in the former Amour Vert Headquarters.
For many residents it feels like the Hub has always been here but it took more than eight years and the dedication of local advocates to make it a reality.
The Hub hosts many meetings for community organizations. This photo was taken right before the Dogpatch Neighborhood Association monthly meeting.
The search began in 2016 with a grass roots organization organized as Friends of the Dogpatch Hub spearheaded by long time Dogpatch resident and neighborhood advocate, Katherine Doumani.
Early efforts explored activating abandoned spaces in Dogpatch such as the Potrero Police Station on Third Street. The Kneass Building located at Crane Cove Park was also considered until the Port of SF declined the group’s proposal.
In 2022 the group secured its current 4,000 square foot space and held a soft opening in 2023. The Hub officially opened with a full slate of programs in 2024. They offer public programs, event space rentals, meeting spaces and more.
Some of the popular programs include a toddler story time, teen art lab, a trivia night and sound healing evenings. Check their program calendar for more information.
The Dogpatch Hub is opened Tuesday-Saturday 11am-6pm. Follow the Instagram @thedogpatchhub for announcements and program highlights.
The second floor at the Dogpatch Hub houses desks for the staff and hosts events like Sound Baths.
A Weekend in Dogpatch
Need some inspiration for weekend fun in Dogpatch? We asked Tommy Lansang, Dogpatch Hub Manager, about his favorite way to spend a Saturday or Sunday in the neighborhood:
Besides hanging out at The Hub, I enjoy climbing at Dogpatch Boulders, browsing the galleries at the Museum of Craft & Design as well as at the Minnesota Street Project galleries. After climbing or museum browsing I like to grab a coffee at the CoffeeShop on 22nd Street or a cup of Grand coffee from the cafe at Minnesota Street Project. Some of my favorite spots for a bite to eat are Sohn, Wooly Pig, Breadbelly and Marcella’s Lasagneria. I also always enjoy a leisurely stroll through Minnesota Grove which is right across from The Hub or Esprit Park.
